What is the Black Legion Supplement?

The Black Legion Supplement is a codex supplement for the 6th Edition of Warhammer 40,000, the tabletop wargame by Games Workshop. It was published online in August 2013, and in print in September 2013. It is a companion book to Codex: Chaos Space Marines, which covers the general rules and units for all Chaos Space Marines factions. The Black Legion Supplement focuses on one specific faction: the Black Legion.

A Codex Supplement for the 6th Edition of Warhammer 40,000

A codex supplement is a book that adds more content and options to an existing codex. A codex is a book that contains the rules, background and army lists for a specific faction or race in Warhammer 40,000. For example, Codex: Chaos Space Marines contains the rules for all Chaos Space Marines factions, such as Alpha Legion, World Eaters, Emperor's Children, etc. The Black Legion Supplement adds more content and options specifically for the Black Legion faction.

The Black Legion Supplement contains 64 pages of new material, including:

  • A detailed history and lore of the Black Legion, from its origins as the Sons of Horus during the Horus Heresy, to its rise as the most feared and powerful warband of Chaos under Abaddon the Despoiler.

  • New rules and special characters for the Black Legion, such as Abaddon himself, his elite bodyguard The Bringers of Despair, his chosen champions The Chosen of Abaddon, and his fanatical followers The Hounds of Abaddon.

  • New formations and relics for the Black Legion, such as The Cyclopia Cabal, The Tormented, The Chosen of Abaddon's Vengeance Battery, The Eye of Night, The Hand of Darkness, etc.

  • New artwork and fluff for the Black Legion, such as illustrations of their heraldry, banners, vehicles and weapons, as well as quotes and stories that showcase their personality and goals.

The History and Lore of the Black Legion

The Black Legion is one of the oldest and most notorious factions of Chaos Space Marines. They were originally known as the Sons of Horus, the loyal legion of Horus Lupercal, the Warmaster who led half of the Space Marine legions in a rebellion against the Emperor of Mankind during the Horus Heresy. However, after Horus was defeated and killed by the Emperor, his legion was shattered and hunted by the loyalists. The surviving Sons of Horus fled to the Eye of Terror, a region of space corrupted by Chaos, where they reformed under a new leader: Abaddon the Despoiler, the former first captain of Horus.

Abaddon renamed his legion as the Black Legion, and vowed to continue Horus' legacy of destroying the Imperium of Man. He also sought to unite the other Chaos Space Marines factions under his banner, either by persuasion, coercion or conquest. He launched a series of massive invasions into the Imperium, known as the Black Crusades, each one more devastating than the last. The most recent and largest one was the 13th Black Crusade, which saw Abaddon breach the Cadian Gate, a key fortress world that guarded the entrance to the Eye of Terror. The fate of the Imperium hangs in the balance as Abaddon's forces rampage across the galaxy.

The Rules and Special Characters of the Black Legion

The Black Legion Supplement provides new rules and special characters for players who want to field a Black Legion army on the tabletop. These rules and characters reflect the unique traits and abilities of the Black Legion, such as their loyalty to Abaddon, their hatred for the Imperium, and their mastery of Chaos. Some of the rules and characters are:

  • Black Legion: This is a special rule that applies to all units in a Black Legion army. It allows them to re-roll failed morale checks, and grants them +1 Leadership if Abaddon is their warlord.

  • Chaos Warlord Traits: These are six special abilities that can be randomly assigned to a Black Legion warlord before the battle. They include things like Eternal Vendetta, which lets the warlord re-roll all failed To Hit and To Wound rolls against Space Marines; or Lord of Terror, which makes enemy units within 12" take Fear tests at -2 Leadership.

  • Abaddon the Despoiler: He is the supreme leader of the Black Legion, and one of the most powerful and feared warriors in the galaxy. He is armed with the Talon of Horus, a power claw that can fire bolts of warp energy; and Drach'nyen, a daemon sword that can cut through anything. He also wears the Mark of Chaos Ascendant, which grants him a 4+ invulnerable save and makes him immune to instant death. He has several special rules, such as Champion of Chaos, which lets him challenge any enemy character in close combat; or First Amongst Traitors, which lets him join any friendly unit regardless of faction.

  • The Bringers of Despair: They are Abaddon's elite bodyguard, composed of Chaos Terminators who have sworn an oath of loyalty to him. They have a higher Weapon Skill and Ballistic Skill than normal Chaos Terminators, and they can re-roll one Look Out, Sir roll for Abaddon in each phase.

  • The Chosen of Abaddon: They are some of the greatest Chaos Champions in the galaxy, who have been singled out by Abaddon for their deeds and skills. They include characters such as Devram Korda, the Tyrant of Sarora; Krassus Falx, author of the Perdigus Atrocity; or Zaraphiston, Abaddon's chief sorcerer. Each one has their own unique weapons, abilities and rules.

  • The Hounds of Abaddon: They are a warband of fanatical Khorne worshippers who follow Abaddon's commands without question. They include units such as Khorne Berzerkers, Chaos Bikers, Chaos Spawn and Helbrutes. They have a special rule called Blood for the Blood God, which lets them re-roll failed charge rolls and grants them +1 Attack on the turn they charge.
